What Material Merge is

Material Merge is a visual catalog for your wardrobe. You photograph the clothing, shoes and accessories you own; the app uses AI to suggest each item's name, type, colour, brand, size and tags; and you record where each piece actually lives — a closet zone, a numbered hanging-rod slot, a dresser drawer, a shelf, a bin. After that you can search your whole wardrobe, see what's clean, build outfits, track what you've lent out, and optionally share a read-only view of your closet with friends.

It's free, it has no ads, and it uses no analytics or tracking SDKs.

Getting started

How do I add my first item?

Tap the + button, take or choose a photo of the item, and AI will suggest its type, colour, brand, size and tags. Review the suggestions, edit anything that's wrong, and save — it's added to your closet.

How do I add several items at once?

From the + button, choose the bulk upload option and select several photos at once. Each photo is analysed in the background — you can review and save them individually, or all together once they finish processing.

How does AI item recognition work?

When you add an item with a photo, the image is sent to Anthropic's Claude AI to identify details like item type, colour, brand, size and descriptive tags. This only pre-fills the form — you can edit or override anything before saving, and you can add an item with no photo at all, in which case no AI processing happens.

Organising your closet

How do locations work?

Each item is assigned a furniture type — Closet, Dresser, Shoe Rack, Coat Closet, Under Bed, Shelves, Storage Bin or Laundry Area — and a section within it. The available sections change to match the furniture, so a dresser offers drawers while a shoe rack offers shelves. A closet additionally has zones, and its hanging rod uses numbered slots.

How do I create a custom location?

When picking a location, type a name that isn't in the list and save it. It becomes a reusable custom location for future items and syncs across your devices.

How do I change where an item lives?

Open the item and tap Edit to change its location. To move several items at once, select them from your Closet tab and use Bulk Edit.

Account and login help

What sign-in options are there?

You can create an account with an email address and password, use Sign in with Apple, use Google Sign-In, or skip signing in entirely and continue as a guest.

I forgot my password

On the email sign-in screen, tap Forgot password? and enter your address. Firebase sends a secure reset link to that inbox. If it doesn't arrive within a few minutes, check your spam folder and confirm you're using the address you signed up with.

I signed in but my items are missing

First, check whether a search term or category filter is active on your Closet tab — clear them to see everything.

If your closet is genuinely empty, confirm you're signed into the right account. Guest sessions and permanent accounts hold separate data, and signing in with a different provider (Apple vs. Google vs. email) creates a different account. Sign out and back in with the method you originally used.

Guest mode

What is guest mode?

Guest mode lets you use the whole app without creating an account. It signs you in anonymously, so no name or email is collected, and your items are tied to that session on your device.

Will I lose my items if I create an account later?

No. Converting a guest session into a full account keeps everything — your items, outfits and settings carry over exactly as they are.

Careful: logging out of guest mode deletes your data

Because a guest session isn't attached to any email address, there's no way to sign back into it. Logging out therefore permanently deletes that guest session's items, outfits and settings. The app warns you before this happens. If you want to keep your closet, create an account instead of logging out.

Sharing your closet also requires a full account — it isn't available to guests.

Photos and camera

The app is asking for camera or photo access

Material Merge asks for camera access to photograph items, and photo-library access to pick existing pictures. Both are only used to add items to your closet.

If you declined earlier and want to change it, go to iOS Settings → Material Merge and enable Camera and Photos there.

My upload failed or AI analysis got stuck

If the AI couldn't analyse a photo, the item is marked with an error status but is not lost — you can still fill in its details manually and save it. A slow connection or an unsupported image format is the usual cause; try retaking or re-selecting the photo.

You never have to wait on AI analysis to keep an item. Fill in the details yourself and save at any point.

I'm offline — will I lose changes?

No. The app keeps a local copy of your closet and stays usable offline. Changes you make are saved on the device and sync automatically once you're back online.

Sharing your closet

How do I share my closet?

Open Share Closet from the header icon or from Account & Settings, choose a username, and turn on public sharing. You can then copy your link or share it directly. Sharing requires a full account.

What can visitors actually see?

By default, only an item's photo and name. In the Share Closet screen you can optionally reveal brand, category, size, colour, storage location, notes or tags. Anyone with the link can view it without signing in, so treat it as public — and think twice before enabling storage location, since it describes places inside your home.

How do I hide an individual item?

Open the item's detail view and toggle Hide from shared closet. Hidden items never appear on your public link, even while sharing is on. You can also switch sharing off entirely at any time, which stops the link from resolving.

Your data, export and deletion

How do I export my data?

Go to Settings → Export My Data. Your request is recorded immediately, and our team prepares your data and emails it to your registered address, typically within 24–48 hours.

How do I delete my account and everything in it?

Go to Settings → Account & Settings → Delete Account. This permanently removes your account, all items, all outfits, all uploaded photos, your profile and sharing settings. It cannot be undone.

If you'd rather we did it, email support@materialmerge.com from your registered address. Full detail is in the Privacy Policy.
